Supervisory Control

Substations are controlled by the operators in the control centre. The operational information from the process and its equipment are send by SASensor to the network management system in the control centre using telecontrol protocols. Many standard and proprietary/legacy protocols are supported within SASensor. These protocols excel in efficient data transmission for telecontrol functions. Indications, measurements, events, alarms and control commands are the main part of the data transmission for the traditional operation service performed by the control centre operators.

New functions are introduced in modern substation automation systems and many more will be required to enable the future services to cater for Smart Grids. The associated information exchange will be in more open formatted data streams which are normally not part of the currently applied telecontrol protocols. Open communication technologies will be required and are available in SASensor.

Fault localization

dfr faultMost of the outage time for power systems is caused by faults in the MV network. The usual way of manually finding the fault location by checking short circuit indicators is time consuming. Utilities want to improve the network performance and one of their goals is to decrease the time to locate the faults and by that the customer minutes lost. A possible way to do this is by using Digital Fault Recordings (DFR) taken at the time of the disturbance. The DFR file recorded by SASensor is automatically send to the control centre after the event. The file is processed by third party software that pin-points the location of the fault in the network.

Power Quality

Our modern society is more and more sensitive to power quality problems. Therefore, a kind of PQ regulation is needed. Such regulation asks for reliable and transparent tools for monitoring and reporting the PQ levels.
Besides using these levels for regulatory issues, they can be used for coordination between the manufacturers of electrical equipment, the customers and the transmission and distribution companies.
power qualitySASensor records the power quality of the voltages according EN50160. The PQ information is stored in files and send to the control centre. Although the information is available within SASensor, a user friendly visualization is performed in the control centre with third party software. The tabular statistical data is transformed in a way that operators keep overview without seeing all the details.

Synchro Phasor Measurements for reliable switching in grids

Distribution networks in urban areas are radial operated with open points to interconnect them for maintenance reasons or after disturbances. Connecting open points during normal operation of the network might influence the load flow in the total network. This might particularly occur if sub-transmission and transmission networks are interconnected with the distribution network in a dense structure. Introduce synchro phasor measurement technology in the network with SASensor by accurately measuring the busbar voltages. The voltage phasor information is send to the control centre where the information is processed in third party load flow software. Calculations show if system conditions are violated.
